BRIC is pleased to announce that Esperanza Spalding will headline a free concert at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival (Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th St. & Prospect Park West), which is presented by Squarespace, on Friday, June 12. The concert, free to the public (with a suggested $3 contribution at the gate), begins at 7:30 P.M. with an opening performance by acclaimed vocalist José James.

The captivating bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding’s “sprawling collage of jazz fusion, Brazilian, and even a touch of hip-hop” (PopMatters) has earned her critical acclaim, universal love, and four GRAMMYs—including Best New Artist in 2011, making her the first ever jazz artist in the category. Her newest project, Emily's D+Evolution rekindles her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement while delving into a broader concept of performance.

The evening begins with fellow free-thinker José James, whose breakout 2013 album No Beginning No End sounded “like the result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow cooked for 50 years” (The New York Times). His latest release, Yesterday I Had The Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday pays tribute to the legendary singer whom he refers to as his “musical mother” in honor of her 100th birthday.

Celebrate Brooklyn! sponsors include Squarespace (Presenting Sponsor), Bud Light and American Express (Series Title Sponsors), and Verb Products, IKEA Brooklyn, KIND Healthy Snacks and WorldStage (Co-Sponsors).

Long-time Season Media Partners are The Village Voice, WABC-7 and WNYC 93.9 FM/820 AM. Promotional partners on select performances include WBGO 88.3 FM and WFUV 90.7 FM.

Digital music platform Rdio is integrated into the Celebrate Brooklyn! App.
