Erik Truffaz makes a triumphal return to MusicHall with Malcolm Braff and their 'Indian Project'

BEIRUT: It was standing-room only at Wadi Abu Jmeel's best-loved concert venue on Tuesday evening as Erik Truffaz made a triumphant return to MusicHall. The world-renowned trumpet player came bearing gifts from the east, in the form of his “Indian Project."

The brainchild of Truffaz and his pianist collaborator Malcolm Braff, the show saw their considerable talents augmented by those of Indrani Mukherjee, a vocalist of great artistic temperament, and Apurba Mukherjee, a virtuoso of the tabla who is well-known on European and American touring circuit.

Known for his affection for musical experimentation, Truffaz once again demonstrated his ability to fuse different styles into a unique musical melange. Mukherjee's overwhelming voice in particular gave the night a touch of magic that will leave a lasting impression upon the MusicHall audience.

Though the ads for this show suggested Truffaz and Braff would be the center of the performance, they did not hesitate to step back and give their co-musicians enough room to air their talents, and to convince the audience of the richness of Indian classical music.

The ability to step back is probably the 48-year-old, Swiss-born Truffaz' greatest strength. The trumpeter gained his first musical experiences at the age of eight, when he took a seat in his father's big band. By age 11, he first glimpsed the wide world of music when he confronted Deep Purple's iconic rock album “Machine Head."
