Take a dash of Vince Guaraldi's music, stir in some original straight-ahead jazz, add a high school choir, and you've got the ingredients for “A Jazz Holiday," a musical treat starring the Eric Mintel Quartet at Bucks County Community College Saturday, November 27. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium of the campus at 275 Swamp Road, Newtown.

“There's always a sense of joy in my playing and the group's performance" which lends to the holiday feel of the show, says Mintel, a pianist who formed the quartet 11 years ago. “Our style of jazz is very lyrical and very melodic."

Mintel says the concert will feature Guaraldi's music from A Charlie Brown Christmas, the cartoon that has introduced several generations to jazz, with the Council Rock High School South Vocal Ensemble lending their voices to such favorites as “Christmas Time is Here."

“It's nice to see the kids into the music. They're great artists in their own right," Mintel says. The vocal ensemble is under the direction of Corey Axler.

Adding to the festive spirit, Mintel will play original compositions from his solo CD, Silent Night. The group will also add some original non-holiday jazz into the mix.

“The main reason for ['A Jazz Holiday'] is to bring families together," adds Mintel. “It's been my goal and my passion over the last 12 years to get jazz into the minds of the public consciousness."

Indeed, Mintel has brought jazz to venues as varied as libraries, churches and fitness centers, to the White House and the Kennedy Center. In March, the group will open for Dave Brubeck and Marian McPartland at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Also next year, Mintel will be featured on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz program on National Public Radio.

In addition to Mintel on piano, the group consists of Dave Antonow on bass, Neil Wetzel on saxophone, and drummer Jeremy Berberian. Their latest CD, Dynamo, joins three other albums by the quartet, in addition to Mintel's solo CD, Silent Night.

Tickets for “A Jazz Holiday" are $17 for adults; and $13 for seniors over age 55, children under age 12, students, and military personnel.
