C-JAZZ PRESENTS THE RE-SCHEDULED PERFORMANCE OF ELLIS MARSALIS & THE TOMMY BANKS QUARTET FEATURING P.J. PERRY WITH MIKE LENT & SANDRO DOMINELLI

Calgary, AB - C-Jazz presents the re-scheduled engagement of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet, Friday, March 24 at 8pm at the EPCOR CENTRE's Jack Singer Concert Hall. Regarded by many as the premier jazz pianist in New Orleans, Ellis Marsalis and his quartet will bring a little Big Easy to Calgary. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (403) 777-0000 or on-line at www.ticketmaster.ca

Originally scheduled to perform in Calgary on September 10, 2005, Ellis Marsalis was unable to travel due to the tragic natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina and Rita that hit the centre of Ellis' hometown of New Orleans.

For over forty years, Ellis Marsalis has touched the jazz world with his genuine love for music and devotion to the art of jazz. He is one of the leading Jazz educators in New Orleans and father to internationally acclaimed musicians Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason. During his career at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), Marsalis taught jazz greats including his sons, trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, pianist and singer Harry Connick, Jr. and saxophonist Donald Harrison. He has made several appearances on the Tonight show with both Carson and Leno, the Today show and the Arsenio Hall Show.

Marsalis began studying at age 11 at the Xavier University junior school of music, and continued his studies to graduate from New Orleans's Dillard University with a B.A in music education, and later received his Masters from Loyola. He returned to Xavier and Loyola as a teacher, and also lectured at the NOCCA. In 1986, he became Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, but returned to his hometown three years later as Director of the Jazz Studies at the University of New Orleans. Ellis recently started ELM records and has over twenty albums to his credit.

Tommy Banks is well-known to Canadians as one of the nations most accomplished and versatile entertainers, and an international standard-bearer for Canadian culture, and for fifteen years, starting in 1968, he hosted the acclaimed Tommy Banks Show. His band traveled the world representing Canadian jazz, including being the first ensemble to play the music in China. He has received numerous awards for his work, including a Juno for his live recording at the Montreaux Jazz Festival (with saxophonist P. J. Perry), and in 1991, he was named an officer of the Order of Canada, and appointed to the Senate in 2000.

C-Jazz, The Calgary Jazz Association, is guided by a mandate to “strengthen, support, and promote jazz in Calgary", including the presentation of artists throughout the year, and the annual C-Jazz Festival every September. This year's festival features Calgary's best musicians and their special guests in downtown performances around Olympic Plaza, the EPCOR CENTRE, and in clubs around town, from September 5 to 9th, 2006.

Tickets for the re-scheduled one-night only engagement of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet, March 24 at 8pm in the EPCOR CENTRE's Jack Singer Concert Hall, are $65 - $45 each plus service charges, and are on sale now through Ticketmaster at (403) 777-000 and www.ticketmaster.ca.
