PITTSBURGH, PA - April 17, 2007 - GRAMMY Award Winning Guitarist Earl Klugh introduces a unique concert series for guitar, jazz and music enthusiasts alike. “Night of Guitars" features a trio of world-renowned guitarists performing their signature styles of music, from Jazz to Brazilian Rhythms, acoustic sounds to electric, and everything in between. Audiences are treated to a performance of solo guitar artistry from each of the three legendary musicians in addition to unparalleled duets and trios live onstage with Earl Klugh.
The series will feature award-winning, internationally acclaimed guitarists Bill Frisell, Russell Malone and Earl Klugh at The Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh, PA, May 3-6th, 2007.
Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is a multi-discipline center for the arts and learning that employs the visual and performing arts to foster a sense of accomplishment and hope in the urban community. MCG Jazz has won four GRAMMY awards for its recordings of the great jazz masters who perform for their concert series. The venue is proud to feature “Night of Guitars" as the finale to their 20th anniversary season.
ABOUT THE NIGHT OF GUITARS SERIES:
“Night of Guitars" founder and host Earl Klugh is known best for his signature melodies in more than 200 compositions and his eloquent mastery of the acoustic guitar. Much of Klugh's career has involved performing and recording with his electric jazz band, though he has diversified his touring as of late with solo and expanded trio performances, as Klugh likes to say. He has always enjoyed playing solo guitar, recording two solo albums including the 2006 GRAMMY Nominated Naked Guitar. He reveals, “For me, it is the most enjoyable and challenging way to play guitar."
Klugh's inspiration for the “Night of Guitars" series began nearly 30 years ago while performing with two of his biggest influences, Chet Atkins and George Benson. Klugh reflects, “I was asked to perform on a television special for PBS, and the program directors approached me about playing as a guitar trio, allowing me to choose the other two guitarists. Hands down I said 'Chet Atkins' and George Benson!' The performance was unforgettable for me."
While the first unofficial “Night of Guitars" aired on the PBS series Soundstage throughout 1978 and 1979, Klugh's “Night of Guitars" series debuted to a sold-out crowd at Earl's annual Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. The show featured GRAMMY Winning guitarist and songwriter Ray Parker Jr. and Smooth Jazz guitar legend Peter White along with Earl Klugh and his band. After a few songs with the group, the 'three amigos' took the stage together with nothing but their bar stools, mics and guitars, seemingly just as happy to be performing together as the audience was to witness it.
