NEW YORK —- duoJalal, the musical pairing of Australian-born classical violist Kathryn Lockwood and her husband, American/Lebanese world percussionist Yousif Sheronick, performs a one-night only concert, Wednesday, April 27th, at New York City's DROM. Featuring works off of its latest album A Different World (Innova Recordings), duoJalal presents a wide-ranging selection of world influenced chamber music. The evening's program is slated to feature excerpts from pieces created especially for the duo by some of today's top composers including Philip Glass, Derek Bermel, Kenji Bunch, and jazz legend John Patitucci (program subject to change). Joining duoJalal on stage will be special guest artists—clarinet virtuoso David Krakauer and master frame drummer Glen Velez.
The fearless musicians and composers of A Different World ultimately forge alliances between world music and a multitude of musical genres ranging from Classical and Klezmer to Middle Eastern and Jazz. The album's eponymous track A Different World (1992) by Italian composer/performer Enzo Rao Camemi evokes a folksy, lightness as heard in Sicilian and Mediterranean music. Derek Bermel's Thracian Sketches (2003) blends original Bulgarian modes. Sheronick pays homage to his mother's village in Lebanon in Jubb Jannin (2002). Philip Glass reunites with Sheronick (Sheronick toured extensively with Glass in 2001) in Duo for Solo Viola and Percussion (2009). David Krakauer, one of the world's leading exponents of Eastern European Jewish Klezmer music, offers his Klezmer a la Bechet (1997), a piece that combines the Klezmer 'terkisher' dance rhythms with New Orleans funk. The album also includes two works (both commissioned by duoJalal) composed by Grammy Award-winning artists: Glen Velez's Homage for Frame Drum and Viola (2007) which invokes the mood of old Roman times; and Scenes for Viola and Percussion (2008) by bassist/composer John Patitucci which blends solo Bach with exotic hand drums.
Described as a mystical, sonic experience, duoJalal performs with virtuosic skill and sensitivity.
