Tony Reedus (1959-2008), who was born and Raised in Memphis, broke onto the international jazz scene after being discovered by late trumpeter Woody Shaw in 1980 during one of Shaw's visits to the Memphis area. Reedus joined Shaw's group which included the likes of Mulgrew Miller, Steve Turre, and Stafford James. He is featured as a sideman on two of Shaw's recordings, United and Master of the Art and remained with Shaw until 1983.
Reedus went on to work with the likes of Mercer Ellington, Dr. Billy Taylor, Freddie Hubbard, Milt Jackson, Mulgrew Miller, Art Farmer, Benny Golson and many, many others. Although Reedus had much success in the jazz world, Reedus took time to complete his studies, earning a degree from Rutgers University New Bruswick 2005. He is survived by his wife, young daughter, brothers, and a host of relatives and friends.
