Jazz isn't a dying art, enthusiasts at the Douglass Theatre's first Jazz in the Courtyard saidon Sunday, but it is in need of rejuvenation.
Longtime area jazz musicians and a few others gathered for what will be a monthly event for the summer. Although it was supposed to be an outdoor event, a severe weather warning ran it into the theater's Gallery Annex.
But supporters were glad to see an event spotlighting jazz in a city with a rich music history and said it was much needed. JazzPlex, the city's only full-time jazz club, closed a few months ago.
There are very few places that program jazz," said Kenneth Rollins, the theater's program director. Where will all the jazz lovers go?"
