Dee Dee Bridgewater Hosts the 14th Annual Women in Jazz Festival

The Smithsonian may have designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month, but one of the season's most intriguing programs hits in May. All performances sold out the past two years, so consider this a hot ticket.

Hosted by Dee Dee Bridgewater, the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival marks its 14th thrilling year with three evenings of star- studded performances featuring the world's top female jazz artists.

Anat Cohen, Maria Schneider and saxophonist Hailey Mae Niswanger are among this year's featured performers at this annual festival celebrating today's top female jazz artists.

This year's schedule:

Thursday, May 14
Esperanza Spalding, bassist and vocalist; Janis Siegel, vocalist; and Anat Cohen, clarinetist/saxophonist, leading her Anzic Orchestra

Friday, May 15
Dee Dee Bridgewater, vocalist; Annette A. Aguilar, percussionist, leading her ensemble StringBeans; Hailey Mae Niswanger, saxophonist and winner of the 2008 Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Competition Anadon

Saturday, May 16
Anne Drummond, flutist; Carmen Lundy, vocalist; and Maria Schneider, composer, leading the Maria Schneider Orchestra
