The David Klein Quintet’s My Marilyn (ENJA) is a heartfelt tribute to the Marilyn Monroe the star and the woman. A huge hit in Europe (selling more that 30,000 copies), My Marilyn is now available in the U.S. The CD has received acclaim from European critics and Marilyn’s friends alike. Swiss saxophonist David Klein risks an intense flirt with the elegant melodies from Monroe's movies, perfectly supported by a superb rhythm section and his mother, singer Miriam Klein, whose interpretations are utterly fascinating. Great music, wonderful booklet." -- STEREOPLAY.
I was inspired to record this tribute to Marilyn Monroe after watching her publicist cry on camera when talking about her," says Klein. I knew then that she had to be an amazing person underneath her star persona to evoke such feelings, which is what we were trying to capture when making this recording in honor of what would have been her 75th birthday."
Many of Europe’s leading magazines agree that My Marilyn is exceptional: In a superbly relaxed atmosphere, in which the instrumental threads waver like coloured ribbons, singer Miriam Klein's gently varied vibrato evokes the much cited candle in the wind." -- JAZZTHING. The most famous woman of the 20th century loved jazz‚€¶ Swiss saxophonist David Klein commemorates this little known passion of the blonde diva in a wonderful, swinging tribute." -- Der Spiegel.
And Marilyn Monroe did love jazz. She listened to the music all the time and even used her influence to get one of her idols, singer Ella Fitzgerald booked at Hollywood’s famous 50’s nightclub Mocambo" at a time when they didn’t book African-Americans. Marilyn called the owner personally to secure the engagement, and as Ella told the story …if he would do it, she (Marilyn) would take a front table every night I was there. She also told him, and it was true, that the press would go wild. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman, ahead of her times and she didn’t know it."
Swiss saxophonist David Klein has performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Cobham, Kenny Clarke and others, and is also a founding member (and the drummer!) of the groundbreaking klezmer band Kol Simcha. For My Marilyn he chose a top-notch jazz trio from New York (Mulgrew Miller was the piano player of choice for Tony Williams, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Donald Byrd and many others) and a vocalist that he is familiar with since his earliest childhood, his mother Miriam. A well-known jazz singer in the 60s and 70s and admired for her Billie Holiday interpretations, Miriam Klein has recorded and performed with Dexter Gordon, Kenny Clarke, Roland Hanna, Slide Hampton and others.
My Marilyn is presented in a deluxe CD Box that includes a stunning booklet with many rare photos and the cover taken by Bert Stern.
