Trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas' Greenleaf Music proudly announces the launch of their new online store, up and running at Greenleafmusic.com. As Douglas brilliantly accomplished in December of 2006 with his Quintet, one of the first major releases at the new website will be eight sets of music from Dave Douglas & Keystone, recorded at The Jazz Standard, this April 10-13. These live recordings will include over 30 original compositions culled from Freak In, Keystone, and Moonshine, as well as unrecorded material, to be available for download purchase within 24 hours of each night's performances. Commenting on the December 2006 Jazz Standard Recordings The New York Times said, “this arrangement recalls the rugged self- reliance of the 1970s avant-garde, but with better technology and a savvier business plan," and, “ . . . it's a fascinating document, partly because of the atmospheric differences between any two given nights."

Greenleaf Music is also pleased to announce 2008 releases from two new Greenleaf artists. First up is critically acclaimed tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who, in addition to leading his own band, has worked with Douglas' Quintet, Maria Schneider, Pat Metheny, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton and many others. McCaslin has recorded a stunningly original tenor saxophone trio record for the label, and will be touring in support. Michael Bates, a contrabassist who has worked Greg Osby, Ohad Talmor, Gerald Cleaver, Russ Johnson, Michael Blake, Dan Weiss, Tyshawn Sorey, Shane Endsley, as well as recording three CD's as a leader, has recorded a quartet for Greenleaf Music. The recording was produced by Dave Douglas and features trumpeter Russ Johnson, saxophonist/clarinetist Quinson Nachoff, and drummer Jeff Davis and presents ten original compositions from a provocative and engaging new voice.

The new Greenleaf store will also feature must-have recordings from Dave Douglas' discography, including: The Infinite, Freak In, Wandering Souls, A Thousand Evenings, Trilogy and Charms of the Night Sky. Titles previously released on Arabesque are also now available in both CD and for download. These titles include Tiny Bell Trio: Live in Europe, Leap Of Faith, Magic Triangle and Stargazer. There is also a merchandise section offering t-shirts and tote bags, and a more extensive sheet music section, including music for two previous Greenleaf titles, Meaning & Mystery and Mountain Passages (available as PDF downloads).

Another major difference audiophiles will instantly notice is that downloaded music will now be offered in a new file type called a FLAC file. It is a lossless compression encoder - larger files, but CD-quality. These files will be slightly more expensive than the MP3 albums which are also being sampled at 256k(VBR), rather than the standard 192k. Douglas' new recording, Moonshine (available now at Greenleafmusic.com and in stores on May 13), is the second recording from his Grammy-nominated band, Keystone. Moonshine boasts the relentless, polyrhythmic funk of drummer Gene Lake and bassist Brad Jones, the Sun-Ra-esque sonics of Adam Benjamin on Fender Rhodes, the constantly shifting improvisations and interactions of DJ Olive, and the front line of Douglas and saxophonist Marcus Strickland.

The current edition of Moonshine available at the website is loaded with extras, including streaming of the film “Moonshine," with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton, along with the title track of the album; the composition, “Moonshine," from the recording, available free in a multi-track version for remixers and musicians to use the material, and much more.

Moonshine is another in a long line of classic albums from Dave Douglas, a tireless creator and perennial poll-winner. With his own label, Greenleaf Music, Douglas is also part of the new wave of recording companies reinventing the business.

Douglas is also a member of the SFJAZZ Collective, currently in its fifth season, honoring the music of Wayne Shorter.

More on Dave Douglas: Twice Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas is arguably one of the most original jazz musicians of his generation. From his New York base, where he has lived since the mid 1980s, he has earned lavish national and international critical acclaim, including trumpeter, composer, and jazz “Artist of the Year" by such organizations as the New York Jazz Awards, Down Beat, Jazz Times, Jazziz, and the Italian Jazz Critics' Society. His solo recording career began in 1993 with Parallel Worlds on the Soul Note label. He has since released more than twenty-five recordings of original music. In 2005, after seven critically-acclaimed albums for the Bluebird/RCA label, he launched his own label, Greenleaf Music. That year he was also the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Besides leading his own groups, Douglas has an important ongoing musical relationship as a member of John Zorn's Masada. He is also a member of the SF Jazz Collective. Additional collaborations have included artists such as Trisha Brown, Myra Melford, Anthony Braxton, Don Byron, Joe Lovano, Uri Caine, Cibo Matto, Susie Ibarra, Sean Lennon, Fred Hersch, Mark Dresser, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, and Horace Silver.

Douglas is currently the artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Center. He is also a founding member and the director of the New York-based Festival of New Trumpet Music now in its sixth year (fontmusic.org). Additionally, Douglas has received composition fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Arts International, the Vooruit Culture Center, Extension Ensemble and the Library of Congress.
