Montreal -- For its 30th edition and as part of the Miles From India concert, the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is pleased to welcome famed Rolling Stones bassist Darryl Jones and illustrious Indian percussionist Selvaganesh, member of the group Remember Shakti. The Miles From India concert, a nod to jazz legend Miles Davis uniting renowned Indian musicians with established American jazzmen, will be held Saturday, July 4, 2009, at 9:30 p.m., in Theatre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts, as part of the Grands concerts TD Canada Trust series. Tickets are already on sale.

American Darryl Jones was barely into his twenties when he joined Miles Davis’ band as bassist in 1983. Rapidly becoming Davis’ protege, he would participate in the recording of Decoy (1984) and You’re Under Arrest (1985). Following that, Jones quickly established himself in the jazz galaxy, sharing stages with Herbie Hancock, Mike Stern and John Scofield, and beyond that, the entire pop music universe, touring with superstars Sting, Peter Gabriel, Madonna and Eric Clapton. Since 1993, he has replaced bassist Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones.

For Indian percussionist Vinayakram Selvaganesh, music is family! He’s the son of T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram, member of the group Shakti and Grammy winner, and grandson of the founder of a music school in India. Selvaganesh established himself as a major talent on the khanjira, an Indian tambourine, and became the symbol of carnatic music typical of southern India. Along with his solo career as a musician, composer and producer, he is also active as a member of Remember Shakti, the quintet inspired by the legendary group Shakti, fusing traditional Indian music with jazz elements, alongside John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain.

Miles From India

Miles goes Indian… or vice-versa? The Festival presents a concert homage to the legend, a major musical project spiced with a delicious touch of exoticism. Inspired by the double album of the same name, Miles from India is a musical fusion of Indian and American cultures. Two groups, one composed of elite Indian musicians, the other of American jazzmen who’ve previously collaborated with Miles or fans, unite onstage for a Subcontinental, spiritual celebration of the master’s music. A remarkable project in its exclusive Canadian presentation!
