Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2009 - from retro to rebirth in 10 days...
Now the program for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2009 has been published. The 31st edition of the festival is an illustration of the eternal rebirth of jazz, but is also looking into the past with a range of tribute concerts to the grand masters of jazz history. The tribute theme sets focus on the musical heritage of legends such as Nina Simone, Ben Webster, Charles Mingus and John Coltrane - just to name a few. Tribute will also be given to a 25 year old masterpiece of Danish jazz music and its creator- AURA by Palle Mikkelborg.

Giant Jazz - jazz doesn't get bigger than this
Among the regular themes of the festival “Giant Jazz" is the biggest, covering the prestigious concerts in Copenhagen's greatest concert halls. This year you can find names like Chick Corea, Blind Boys of Alabama, Bajofondo, Yusef Lateef and Sing The Truth - the Nina Simone project with four stellar singers: Dianne Reeves, Angelique Kidjo, Lizz Wright and Nina Simone's daughter Simone.

These concerts will take place at Denmark's Radio's new concert hall, the Royal Theatre and Glassalen at Tivoli Gardens.

Something Else... is this supposed to be jazz?
When Copenhagen got a completely new playhouse last year which in many ways was different from the city's other venues, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for the festival to introduce a new theme: Something else... The idea was to challenge people's idea of jazz - and judging by audience numbers and reactions, the experiment was a huge success. Therefore this year's festival again offers a different kind of experience under the Something Else umbrella at the stages of the new playhouse.

As main act the festival presents Swedish singer and guitarist Jos Gonzalez while also new Danish names such as The Crooked Spoke and Er De Sjældne? (Are They Rare?) can be experienced. Also on stage will be the English electronica genius Jon Hopkins together with American Daedelus.

Copenhagen Jazz Hotspot @ Pressen - debate, film and live jazz
Last year Copenhagen Jazz Festival got a new meeting point for the city's many festival goers - a hot spot where the festival can be experienced from a different angle through live interviews, record sales, film screenings debate and much more. This year there will be even more live concerts at night and more films, debate and other events during the day. With one exception the evening concerts will be tribute concerts settled around a certain classic jazz record. A. o. Marie Fisker will interpret Velvet Underground, Poul Dissing performs Satchmo in Danish, Hans Ulrik plays Coltrane's “A Love Supreme" and Ibrahim Electric has a go at the Mingus classic “Mingus Ah Um". There will also be opportunity to listen to fabulous America pianist Aaron Parks.

European and Nordic Jazz at Den Sorte Diamant
The Royal Library has a concert hall, perfectly suited for performing classic chamber music, but the word has spread that it is an equally amazing venue for jazz. During this year's festival Den Sorte Diamant features concerts with European and Nordic artists such as Enrico Pieranunzi, John Taylor, Marilyn Mazur, Arild Andersen and Carsten Dahl.

Jazz for Kids - shall we play jazz?
Jazz for Kids consists of five days of jazz concerts for children, workshops and new events such as Syngelyst and Stella Polaris for Kids.

Syngelyst is a campaign aiming at making children sing more, sing together and write their own songs based on the belief that singing is a fun, healthy and social activity that can assemble children across different cultures and languages.

Stella Polaris is chill-out/ambient music, unfolding and discovering electronic sounds. This initiative is now for the first time presented for children where children as well as adults can enjoy the park area around Østre Anlæg while they play, listen, dream, draw, chill or lunch. The performing artists are all part of the Danish or international elite.

Jazz Open Air - jazz by the sea, on the streets, squares and parks
During the day Copenhagen will be full of free open air jazz concerts at the many squares and the park Kongens Have. Focusing on Danish jazz composers all of them have something special in store. At night the Jazz by the Sea program at Islands Brygge offers a varied musical programme for those who want to experience Copenhagen Jazz Festival without being full blood jazz aficionados, ranging from Swedish artist Lisa Ekdahl, Danish Lars H.U.G. and more jazzy names like the Danish trio Ginman/Blachman/Dahl.

And then there is...
Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2009 also presents a 10 days program at Copenhagen Jazz House with Curtis Stigers, Ibrahim Electric and a tribute to Ben Webster a.o. At Haveselskabets Have you can experience John Scofield & The Piety Street band, Danish Sinne Eeg and Cuban star pianist Roberto Fonseca. Open air at Tivoli Gardens Dee Dee Bridgewater, George Duke and Rick Astley will be performing- Astley being in jazzy company with Tivolis Big Band. Tivoli's Concert Hall is hosting James Taylor and the floating venue Stubnitzis back, loaded with Jazzclub Loco...
