Wednesday, November 19, 2008 — The 30th anniversary of the Festival International de Jazz de Montral is already looking great! After announcing the release of a superb photo album commemorating three decades of musical magic, the Festival reveals the names of the major artists already signed on for the 2009 program of the Jazz All Year Round series, presented by General Motors: the divine Diana Krall and quintet of legends the Five Peace Band! Tickets go on sale this Saturday, November 22 at noon.

Diana Krall — May 6 and 7, 8 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier de la PdA — With all due respect to Mr. Costello, Diana Krall is enjoying a genuine love affair with this Festival! Since her dazzling breakthrough in Montreal in 1995, Diana Krall has visited us a number of times, but hasn’t played here since 2004. All will remember that appearance, when she starred in the Festival’s 25th anniversary gala, at the Centre Bell, a memorable evening subsequently immortalized on DVD! This year, the world’s most popular female jazz singer/pianist finally returns, this time to Place des Arts, where she will expand her usual accompaniment to include a symphony orchestra. It’s an all-new show, and the rumour slipping out of Rio de Janeiro, where she recorded her forthcoming 2009 album, is that we can expect a masterpiece!

Five Peace Band with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Brian Blade — April 28, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA — Originally a track on guitarist John McLaughlin’s Floating Point album, Five Peace Band is the name of the group he co-pilots with pianist Chick Corea. The two musicians are collaborating for the first time since the legendary sessions for Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew in August 1969, which led them, respectively, to found the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever, absolute touchstones in the history of jazz-rock. Kenny Garrett (sax), Christian McBride (double bass) and Brian Blade (drums) join in for this historic summit. Please remember that tickets remain for new concerts by Susie Arioli, Wednesday, November 26 and Thursday, November 27, 8 p.m., in Thtre Outremont.

A non-profit organization, the Festival International de Jazz de Montral is pursuing its mission of disseminating and developing jazz and its musical cousins for the ninth year in a row, by reinvesting its surpluses in the presentation of special concerts in its Jazz All-Year Round series. With support from public partners, specifically, the Socit de dveloppement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and Canadian Heritage, it can thus offer Montrealers and visitors to the city the chance to experience the rhythms of jazz all-year round! The Festival also recognizes the support of Bell, partner in the series, as well as the Hyatt Regency Montral, official hotel of the Jazz All-Year Round series.

Spectra Newsletter subscribers will have exclusive internet access to tickets on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21. To subscribe, simply visit montrealjazzfest.com.
