Low Ridin'—the debut CD of Chris Washburne & The SYOTOS Band for ZOHO—created an international buzz, being featured on WBGO's “Radar" preview spotlight, on the NPR Music homepage and maintaining a healthy presence on the Jazz Week jazz charts upon its release last year.

Low Ridin' showcases Latin Jazz instrumental versions of 1960s and 70s Classic Rock songs- called Acid Mambo by its musicians. Afro-Latin jazz on a psychedelic trip! Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, etc.—meet Tito Puente! The band's name “SYOTOS" is a word coined by Chris Washburne in 1992, created as an acronym for “See You On The Other Side"—a term which has subsequently been widely used as military jargon among computer gamers.

Chris Washburne

S.Y.O.T.O.S. was founded in 1992 by trombonist Chris and features some of the best Latin jazz players in New York City. SYOTOS pushes the genre of Latin Jazz into uncharted waters with a postmodern mix that embraces dissonance, weaving contemporary up-tempo beats with a driving sound. This boundary-breaking band exemplifies Latin jazz with a global reach, combining Afro-Cuban, funk, jazz, gospel, and contemporary classical music- “think Tito Puente meets James Brown meets Charles Ives!" TimeOut New York calls the group “a Latin jazz institution" as they held the longest running Latin jazz gig in New York, performing weekly for 20 years straight. The band's members are alumni from the bands of Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Ray Barretto and they continue with the foundations inherited by those Latin music greats, pushing the genre in the 21st century.

“Chris Washburne is a young talent most deserving wider recognition."—Howard Mandel, Jazz Critic for Downbeat and Village Voice

“Chris Washburne is a superior hard bop player..."—Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

“Trombonist Chris Washburne... an excellent player..."—Ben Ratliff, New York Times

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
