Few of his stature have had such an influence on the development of British music across so many styles and generations.
—Sir Tim Rice
On March 2nd, the world mourned the passing of Chris Barber OBE. A British Jazz pioneer who performed for over seven decades until his retirement in 2019, Barber was a transformational figure in the UK music scene. He unlocked the door for a new generation of renowned musicians who in turn, continue to inspire on a global scale.

Many paid tribute, among them, Bill Wyman, who said, “Without Chris Barber, the Stones and The Beatles would not be where they are now.” Sir Tim Rice noted “…few of his stature have had such an influence on the development of British music across so many styles and generations.”

A Trailblazer’s Legacy, out July 23rd, on the Last Music Company label, is testament to Barber’s remarkable career. Fully authorized by Barber and running at approximately five hours playing time, this four-CD and book set includes an eighteen-thousand-word annotated discography and biography by Alyn Shipton, author of Barber’s biography “Jazz Me Blues." The set spans seven decades from Barber’s first studio recordings in 1951 to a final session in 2018, made just four months before his 89th birthday. Featuring many of Barber’s collaborations with internationally renowned musicians, the book also includes over 150 photographs and an insider’s view of his motor racing career by Dave Brodie.

“Kate [Barber] was keen for me to use as many photographs and images as possible from their private collection as it also included a marvellous selection from his motor racing days, and she suggested that it would be a great opportunity to include them here accompanied by the recollections of one of his racing team – Dave Brodie,” says Malcolm Mills.

Work began on A Trailblazer’s Legacy back in 2019, on the heels of Barber’s official retirement. “The release date was set to June 2021 by which time we were hopeful that the (Chris and Kate Barber endorsed) Big Chris Barber Band would be regularly performing again, albeit without him while he was still in care. The promotion was due to start in April 2021 but upon news of his passing, I was prepared to defer publication until a more appropriate time. However, after careful discussion with Kate, we agreed to continue on schedule as a tribute to the great man,” says Malcolm Mills.

A Trailblazer’s Legacy is available in 4CD-book format only. The edition is limited to 1,000 copies.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
