Organisers of the first ever Dubai International Jazz Festival introduces another new concept in Jazz entertainment
Dubai, March 2003: Chillout Productions, the organisers and founders of the first Philips Dubai International Jazz Festival, is organising the first of its ďJazz ChilloutĒ concerts at the Hilton Jumeirah Hotelís Wave Breaker Garden on 10th April. The concert will feature improvised music played by legendary Jazz musicians and local talent. The first Jazz Chillout will feature international artists, Victor Bailey (bass), and Bennie Maupin on the saxophone with Peter Horvath (keyboard) and Scott Peaker on the drums.
Without doubt, bassist Victor Bailey belongs to one of the greatest in the last decades. He recorded and toured with artists like Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Bill Evans, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Madonna. A native Philadelphian and current resident of Los Angeles, Bailey is a link in that long lineage of Philly bass that has produced such extraordinary players as Jymie Merritt, Tyrone Browne, Alphonso Johnson, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Charles Fambrough, Gerald Veasley and Christian McBride.
Growing up in a musical household (his father Morris Bailey was a respected saxophonist and writer-arranger for many of the acts on Philadelphia Sound Records), Victor was exposed at an early age to a constant flow of great Philly musicians.
After a stint at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Bailey migrated to the New York scene. It was on his first recording date in town, guitarist Bobby Brownís Clean Sweep (GRP), that he met drummer Omar Hakim. They also did two gigs with singer Miriam Makeba before joining Weather Report in 1982. The Madonna gig came after her 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live." Considering his deep-seated love of groove, Bailey was fulfilled in the pop setting of Madonnaís music as he was in the jazzier realms of Joe Zawinul's world beat fusion music. While he remains the bass anchor in the Zawinul Syndicate, Victor also eagerly awaits the opportunity to spread the bass gospel on tour with his own band.
His first album as a leader Bottomís UpĒ came out 1990 on Atlantic In 1999 followed his debut album on ESC Records Low BlowĒ, his second solo album. Maupin, who lives in Altadena, studied at the Detroit Institute of Music while working part time and playing, with groups in Detroit until the Four Tops, a musical group, asked that he join them for a New York gig. When the engagement finished, Maupin continued playing with various bands in New York City. While in New York he recorded With Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.
Leaving the Big Apple 10 years later, Maupin headed for Los Angeles and was based in Hollywood where the bulk of rehearsing, television appearances and recording took place. On a trek to San Francisco he merged with Herbie Hancock, creating the album Headhunters," which has sold more than 1 million copies and has earned both gold and platinum status. Maupin also composes and arranges, and is studying film scoring and composition with Lyle (Spud) Murphy. Contemporary jazz pianist/keyboardist and composer, Peter Horvath has been perfecting his craft since the age of 6 when he began taking classical piano lessons. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he attended the Bela Bartok Conservatory of Music. Son of famous Hungarian singer Zsuzsa Matrai, Peter had a natural and intense desire for music. At age 17, he won the National Jazz Combo Competition in Gyor, Hungary, and two years later in 1980, he moved to Austria to attend the Vienna Conservatory of Music. Establishing himself rather quickly in the Austrian jazz scene, he began playing and touring with jazz notables, such as Leo Wright.
In 1983, Horvath made his move to the United States, where he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He later relocated to San Francisco, which he now calls home. Since that time, Peter has performed, toured, and recorded with a long line of world-class artists. He toured with jazz greats Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, and Bob Sheppard. He recorded/toured with Rosie Gaines, Ray Obiedo, Kenneth Nash, J. Spencer, the Braxton Brothers, and Steve Smith. He also performed with Keith Washington, Ricky Lawson, Tiger Okoshi, Brandon Fields, Tom Coster, Richie Cole, and the Oakland Symphony. Peter composed for and performed with David Garibaldi for his Warner Brothers video/CD series. He also played the tracks for Aretha Franklinís performance of the National Anthem at the 1993 World Series.
Peter Horvathís first solo recording, Foreign Matter", (Lake Street Records) has received enormous national contemporary jazz radio airplay. In its first week of release, it was the #1 most added recording to Gavinís Adult Alternative Chart, and #2 most added to Radio & Recordís NAC Chart. Peterís talent as a pianist/keyboardist is matched by his role as a composer and producer. Horvathís diverse background is manifested in his performances and compositions, with both complexity and clarity. Performing with a passion, and heightened by his fiery personality, he uses every ounce of energy to convey his finely crafted compositions. Horvath is a serious artist with more than mere entertainment in mind, combining appealing melodies with plenty of sound for thought.
Jazz Chillout will not only feature music from the Jazz legends but will include local artists Serge Bekhaazi and Metin Sayer on guitars, Moe Kamal (vocals), Andre Segone (bass), Tim Burnell (drums) and Nidouk on the keyboards. ďJazz Chillout is all about inventing and improvising live music, bringing cultures together,Ē said Anthony Younes, MD, Chillout Productions (COP), an avid Jazz enthusiast. ďThe whole idea of the event will be a build up to the 2nd Philips Dubai International Jazz Festival next year. It is about interacting casually with talented and legendary musicians.Ē In addition to the concerts that begin at 7:30pm, there will be jam sessions.
