The Norse Mythology Blog has won the international vote for Best Religion Weblog in the 2012 Weblog Awards. The blog features original articles and interviews by Chicago-based Norse mythologist Dr. Karl E. H. Seigfried.

Seigfried is also a critically-acclaimed jazz musician in Chicago. His 2010 album PORTRAIT OF JACK JOHNSON received four-star reviews from DownBeat and Jazz'n'More (Switzerland), and it was named a “Top Ten Album of 2010" by the editors of Jazziz. His next recording (due in Spring 2012) is a collaboration with Calvin Weston (drummer for Ornette Coleman's Prime Time) that features appearances from Todd Rundgren (Utopia), John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), John Helliwell (Supertramp), Jay Beckenstein (Spyro Gyra), Nik Turner (Hawkwind), Jack Walrath (Charles Mingus Quintet) and Vernon Reid (Living Colour).

The fact that a one-man blog about Thor, Odin and Freya won the award is something of a coup; other finalists included Religion Dispatches, Christian Blog and Freethought Blogs—all large multi-author sites covering “mainstream" religions.

Now at norsemyth.org: “Why Norse Mythology?"—Dr. Seigfried's new two-part essay addressing the fact that international voters chose Norse mythology. It looks at the multitude of ways in which Norse myth continues to affect the lives of many in today's world.

The essay also offers a call to action for interfaith organizations and religion journalists, asking them to broaden their definition of “religion" beyond Christianity, Judaism and Islam—and to include minority religions in our national dialogue on faith.

Dr. Seigfried is Norse Religion Faculty at Carthage College. He has taught Norse mythology in Chicago at both Loyola University's Continuum and the Newberry Library. He has been a featured speaker at the Wagner Society of America and a featured writer at the Joseph Campbell Foundation. He is a member of the Religion Newswriters Association, the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study (US) and the Viking Society for Northern Research (UK).
