Chamber Music America, celebrating its 32nd year as the national service organization for the ensemble music profession, announces its spring grant opportunity for U.S. jazz ensembles, 2009 NEW JAZZ WORKS: Commissioning and Ensemble Development.

The New Jazz Works program is made possible by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Since 2000, Chamber Music Americas New Works programs have provided support to professional U.S. ensembles for the creation and performance of new works in the jazz idiom. To date, New Works has supported the creation of over one hundred new jazz compositions. Past New Works grant recipients include The Marcus Roberts Trio, Myra Melfords Be Bread, The Vijay Iyer Quartet, Dafnis Prieto Quintet, and Nicole Mitchells Black Earth Ensemble, among many others.

This year, in response to ongoing program evaluations and conversations with jazz ensembles and presenters around the country, CMA and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation have expanded the program to include longer-term benefits for recipients. As in the past, the program supports the creation and presentation of new compositions; now renamed New Jazz Works, it will also support additional activities that extend the life of the work, and allow the ensemble leader to acquire or increase career-related business skills.

The in-office application deadline is Friday, May 1, 2009, 5:00 P.M. 2009 New Jazz Works guidelines and application
