Kenny Dorham's Backyard
1106 E. 11th St.
Austin, TX 78702

Ten years ago a residency, showcase and open jam session began at Kenny Dorham's Backyard in Austin Texas. The brainchild of bassist and curator Harold McMillan of Diverse Arts Culture Works and international musician Willie Oteri after seeing little to no support from Austin promoters for local artists who perform in various Beyond Jazz styles- and what better place than at an outside venue? The showcase known as Jazz OUTside runs every 4th Thursday of the month and incorporates a closing free jazz, beyond jazz, anything goes jam session with no sign up list, no charts and never a standard or real book tune. Truly a jam. Jazz OUTside has also promoted shows incorporating out of town artists of name while still keeping the focus on providing a platform local Austin artists.

The shows run two or three hours depending on the lineup. Oteri leads various groups of local musicians for the opening slot, often followed by a showcase of international talent and the open jam session.

Named for the legendary jazz trumpeter and East Austinite, Kenny Dorham’s Backyard is Diverse Arts outdoor music venue, located in the heart of the historic East End cultural district, just down the street from Kenny Dorham’s last home in Austin and is Home to the Austin Jazz and Arts Fest, Jazz OUTside, East End Summer Music Series, Soul Fest, and the Backyard Blues Series, the bulk of the live music programming honors the traditional African American music community- jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and gospel—once anchored along East 11th Street in classic venues such as the Victory Grill and Charlie’s Playhouse.

Diverse Arts uses this space to pursue our mission of presenting multidisciplinary, multicultural events and activities which mirror the face of contemporary Austin.

Kid kriendly, Food trucks on the grounds. All are welcome.
