There is nothing like hearing her orchestra at the Jazz Standard...it has become one of those things: an Annual Event." —New York Observer
For nearly a decade, this Grammy award-winning composer/band leader and her orchestra have held forth during Thanksgiving Week. It has become an annual tradition and one of the most–anticipated performances of the year. Join us for some music and all the fix ins!
Maria Schneider’s music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization.” From her orchestra’s debut recording, Evanescence (1994), Schneider began to develop her personal way of writing for the seventeen–member collective. Like Duke Ellington, she tailored her compositions to highlight the uniquely creative voices of the group. Schneider and her orchestra have a distinguished recording career with nine GRAMMY nominations and two GRAMMY Awards; her 2004 album Concert in the Garden made history as the first recording sold only on the Internet to win a GRAMMY. All of us at Jazz Standard are proud and pleased to welcome back this great American musician and her orchestra for another wonderful Thanksgiving residency. Time magazine says: “To call Schneider the most important woman in jazz is missing the point…She is a major composer, period.”
