Calendar FAQ: Why do I have to enter the venue if it does not exist in the AAJ Database?

We've received several emails recently—from both presenters and musicians—asking why they must add a venue before they can submit an event (if the venue does not exist in the AAJ database).

The answer:

Once a venue (with complete address) is added to the database, All About Jazz/Jazz Near You can then map that address to a longitude and latitude. Knowing the venue's physical location allows us to place the event on our local calendar page, on our venue listing page, and include the event in the weekly regional concert calendar email blast.

Without the venue address, we have no way of knowing the longitude and latitude and are limited to showing the event on just a musician's profile page.

So, the steps are:

1. If a venue does not exist in the database, add it;

2. Enter your event and associate it with the newly added venue.

[ see the QUICK TIP in the first comment below if you are still experiencing problems adding an event after adding the venue ]

It's our understanding that most presenters, musicians and readers value the local calendar and email blast, and with Jazz Near You coming soon, the events will also appear in the mobile app.

So, sadly, we can't have our cake and eat it too. The venue must be added and that includes churches and other non-traditional performance spaces.
