Buck's Acclaimed New CD
Buck Hill
Relax (Severn Records 0039)
The Grammy Awards were handed out last night, and we've got an award- winning lineup at the Jazz Cafe this Friday, February 16th as we celebrate the 80th birthday of DC jazz legend Buck Hill. Buck and his quartet will provide the musical entertainment, and they will be joined throughout the evening by other jazz luminaries, including Billy Hart, Barry Harris, Lawrence Wheatley, and George Botts. This all-star tribute will be emceed by WPFW's Jamal Muhammad and drummer extraordinaire Nasar Abadey. Last summer's release of Hill's critically acclaimed Relax" marked the re-emergence of this saxophone master as a musical force both in the studio and on the stage. Come hear this octagenarian at the top of his game!
Next Friday, February 23rd, we wrap up the month with another DC hero, the great drummer Steve Williams for a CD release party. Best known for his long musical association with the late Shirley Horn, Williams' New Incentives" on the French Elabeth label showcases his gifts as a leader. He'll be joined on the date by top drawer artists Larry Willis (piano), Gary Thomas (sax), Donvonte McCoy (trumpet), and Michael Bowie (bass), and special guest vocalist Jamie Broumas. This another can't miss" show!
