This Saturday, December 20th, trumpeter and Fresh Sound New Talent recording artist Phil Grenadier will join the Brian Patneaude Quartet for a special performance at The Van Dyck (237 Union St. Schenectady, NY). The group will be performing the original music of Phil Grenadier as well as brand new material written by the members of the BPQ.

Originally from San Francisco, Phil Grenadier has made quite a name for himself since relocating to the East Coast in 1988. The Boston-based trumpeter has worked with a plethora of high profile jazz artists including Kenny Barron, Freddie Hubbard, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mick Goodrick, Seamus Blake, Chris Potter, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Anthony Braxton, Ethan Iverson, Mulgrew Miller, Bill Stewart, Jeff Ballard, John Hollenbeck, Jason Lindner, Bob Belden, Kevin Hays, Larry Goldings, Brad Shepik, Richie Beirach, Billy Hart, and others.

Phil has appeared on multiple recordings as a sideman and has recently released two CDs on the prestigious Fresh Sound New Talent label. His latest release, “Playful Intentions", features guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, pianist Bill Carrothers, drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist (& brother) Larry Grenadier. Phil's debut CD “Sweet Transients" featured recent Monk Saxophone Competition winner Seamus Blake, rising piano star Ethan Iverson (of the Bad Plus), drummer extraordinaire Bill Stewart and brother Larry on bass.

Formed in the spring of 2002 as part of an ongoing Sunday night residency at Justin's in Albany, NY, the Brian Patneaude Quartet have crafted “a distinctive style that constantly catches the listener off guard with it's unpredictability" (Cadence Magazine). The foursome of George Muscatello (guitar), Ryan Lukas (bass), Danny Whelchel (drums) and Brian Patneaude (saxophone) “balances inventive improvisation with slippery-smooth melodies for a sound as refreshing as it is classic." (Seven Days, Burlington, VT). The group was recently awarded “Best Jazz" in Metroland Magazine's “Best of the Capital Region 2003" issue and their latest CD “Variations" (WEPA Records) was rated four out of five stars in the All Music Guide.
