LOS ANGELES, CA: International Filipino-American contemporary jazz artist, Boy Katindig, just held a concert last month at The Promenade at Gano Excel in Irwindale, CA—the jazz keyboard player's second sold-out concert at the same venue. The show also starred, as guests, Al Jarreau's famed saxman, Michael Paulo, and seasoned vocalist from Manila, Louie Reyes. Here, Katindig reunites with Paulo after years of separation from being in the same label, Noteworthy Records, back in 1995.

Katindig was backed-up by a strong rhythm section with percussionist, George Rossi (Kalapana), complementing the upbeat latin-jazz compositions. Katindig and Paulo also reminisced their Noteworthy days as they played, “Follow Your Road," which they used to play with Seawind vocalist, Pauline Wilson. This time, it was given a new twist with Reyes taking on vocal chores, showing off her seasoned chops in an improvisation duel with Paulo.

The concert's repertoire featured Katindig's award-winning tunes with Reyes on vocals. It was only Reyes's second time to work with Katindig—the first time was in the prestigious Manila Hotel back in the 80's. Another featured Filipina vocalist, Maricar Cabasag, was also well-applauded with her rendition of Katindig's popular song, “Away From You."

Katindig showcased songs from his latest album, “Groovin' High." The tune, “Voce e Minha Vida," where Katindig tirelessly traded blazing solos with Paulo, received a standing ovation. Katindig also featured bassist, K.T. Tyler, and drummer, Nate Scott, in his tune, “Unconditional Love," a cut in the album in which Tyler laid the original bass lines to. The entire ensemble showed-off their chops, precision and tightness in their interpretation of Chick Corea covers, “Blue Miles" and “CTA."

The audience was definitely “groovin' high" as they craved for more after 90 minutes of non-stop music.

Good news for those wishing for another dose of Boy Katindig's performance! He goes to Glendale this time, for a concert on Friday, February 3rd, at the new joint, Noypitz Bar. This time, he features another Filipina vocalist, Ninette Tenza. Tickets had been sold out as early as last Monday but, SRO (Standing Room Only) tickets would still be available at the venue. For more information, interested parties may call 818-653-0877.

After this show, Boy Katindig goes back to the Philippines to continue his mission on pushing jazz all over the country, officially releasing his album, “Groovin' High" (official Philippine release), and, working on more original music. —Associated Press
