PRODUCERS PAT PHILIPS & ETTORE STRATTA ANNOUNCE
BOSSABRASIL FESTIVAL DEBUT, APRIL 17-21

With Cesar Camargo Mariano, Romero Lubambo, Leny Andrade Paquito D'Rivera, Joyce, Dori Caymmi, Kenny Werner

Birdland welcomes The BOSSABRASIL FESTIVAL, beginning Tuesday, April 17. The festival will commence with the duo of Cesar Camargo Mariano on piano and guitarist Romero Lubambo (who sound more like an orchestra) April 17 & 18. Cesar recently received a Latin “Grammy" Lifetime Achievement Award for legendary status in the world of Brazilian/Pop music as Producer/Arranger/Pianist and has worked with a who's who such as Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Jobim... Romero, a greatly in demand guitarist, has performed/recorded with Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Diane Reeves, Yo-Yo Ma, Paquito D'Rivera.

Guest vocalist and outstanding improviser Leny Andrade, will join the duo in a rare New York City appearance. After a brief stint of melding avant-garde with samba in the 1970s, Andrade returned to her forte, samba-jazz. She is undoubtedly one of the strongest vocalists of the genre still performing throughout the world.

Paquito D'Rivera is also set to share the stage April 17-18. A prodigy from the beginning, Grammy award winning saxophonist/ clarinetist D'Rivera has performed with the a who's who in the music world from Dizzy Gillespie to Yo-Yo Ma, Phil Woods, James Moody, Wynton Marsalis to name a few. He is one of the founders of the innovative musical group Irakere, and recently received the Kennedy Center's “Jazz Legend Award". The NY Times says he has become “...the man to call for Pan-Latin music".

Grammy nominated vocalist and guitarist, Joyce, will be joined by celebrated guitarist Dori Caymmi on Thursday April 19 - 21. Joyce's compositions have been recorded by some of Brazil's musical legends: Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, and Astrud Gilberto. Through her lyrics she often addresses the inequalities and contradictions of Brazilian society during the 1970s. Joyce has had a huge influence on the new generation of musicians and continues to produce original and exciting new music. Just as illustrious, Caymmi, who has written scores for television and film, is set apart from other guitarists for his unorthodox guitar tunings and harmonies. Featured Thursday April 19 through Saturday April 21 will be Tutty Moreno (drums), and Rodolfo Stroeter (bass).

Kenny Werner, known as one of the hottest pianists on the scene today, will be on piano April 19 - 21. His passion for Brazilian music is irrefutable, as seen when he tours with the great Toots Thielemans as Musical Director.

Join the BOSSABRASIL Festival where the air will be filled with the swinging sounds of Boss Nova, cherished standards, and new innovations. Prepare to be surrounded by the romance of Brazil!
