“The energy of jazz comes from many sources. One of those is the tenacity and perseverance required to sustain oneself throughout the years while making music that is honest and uncompromising. Thrive embodies this feeling. For the last seven years the Cotangent quartet has been my primary palette. I have written music for this group without concern for stylistic restraints. The compositions come from a deep connection with my band mates. The level of trust and sense of unity in this group has been a feature from it's inception and over the years matured into an inspiring facet of our music. This recording includes selections written especially for guest Ron Horton whose masterful interpretation captures the essence of my music" --Bill Gerhardt, Jazz Composers Forum

The quartet Cotangent was formed in 1999 in New York City. Mommaas and Gerhardt first met in Amsterdam, the Netherlands where they planned to some day form a group. Their first self-titled release was produced after a series of performances that culminated with a fundraiser for regional music programs in Gerhardt's home town of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The band performs regularly at Sweet Rhythm (formally Sweet Basil) in New York. They have also participated in several programs for the Jazz Composers Forum including holding composition and small combo workshops throughout the Carolinas and appearing on the Main Street Jazz and Concert on the Quad series.
