Berklee's Percussion Week '03 April 2 - 5 To Feature Visiting Vibist Jay Hoggard

Saturday's annual Percussive Arts Society Day includes Pendulum Percussion Duo, plus Mike Mangini and Hypercane

BOSTON -- Berklee College of Music's Percussion Department presents its annual “Percussion Week" from Wednesday, April 2 through Saturday, April 5, 2003. All events are open to the public. This year's vibraphone-heavy schedule includes one of the premier voices on vibes Jay Hoggard, plus a concert by four faculty vibists, “Four by Four: A Tribute to Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, Milt Jackson, and Cal Tjader."

Berklee's world-renowned percussion faculty will present clinics and concerts daily at various venues on campus, beginning at 1 p.m. All clinics and concerts are free, except for nightly concerts at the wheelchair-accessible Berklee Performance Center. Wednesday and Thursday evening BPC concerts are $5, $2 for seniors, and are available at the box office, 136 Mass. Ave., Boston, 617-747-2261. Tickets for the “Four by Four" event are $10, $4 for seniors.

Percussion companies will be exhibiting instruments and equipment every day during Percussion Week at 921 Boylston Street in Boston. Saturday, April 5, has been designated Massachusetts Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion and is devoted to the high school and college percussion student, the music educator, and the percussion enthusiast. Saturday's events begin at 9 a.m. and end that evening with an exciting rock concert by faculty drummer Mike Mangini (who has played with Extreme and Steve Vai) and his band Hypercane at 7:30 p.m. in the Berklee Performance Center.

Wednesday, April 2
Professor John Ramsay will kick off Percussion Week '03 with a drumset workshop at 1 p.m. in the Berk Recital Hall, 1140 Boylston Street. At 4 p.m Assistant Professor Nanae Mimura will present a solo marimba concert in the David Friend Recital Hall, 921 Boylston Street. At 7 p.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall, Associate Professor Rod Morgenstein will lead the Rudess Morgenstein Project, a power duo that features Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess.

Also on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m., Berklee Percussion Associate Professors Ian Froman and Kim Plainfield will share the bill on a contemporary jazz concert at the Berklee Performance Center. Tickets for this concert are $5, $2 for seniors.

Thursday, April 3
At 2 p.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall, Assistant Professor Francisco Mela will present a drumset concert with two talented alums, Leo Blanco on piano and Peter Slavov on bass. At 3 p.m. in the Berk Recital Hall, Professor Skip Hadden will present a drumset workshop. At 4 p.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall, visiting artist, renowned vibist Jay Hoggard, will present a clinic, sponsored by Ludwig/Musser, entitled “Marimba and Vibraphone in African and American Musical Idioms." At 7 p.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall, vibist Hoggard will join Percussion Assistant Chair Yoron Israel and his group Organic in a free concert of original compositions, works associated with the soulful organ legacy, with Sam Yahel (organ) and Ed Cherry (guitar).

Also on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. in the Berklee Performance Center, World Music Night will feature Associate Professors Jamey Haddad and Joe Galeota. Tickets for this event are $5, $2 for seniors.

Friday, April 4
Events begin with a 1 p.m. concert in the Berk Recital Hall by Berklee Percussion Instructor Dave Cowan. At 2 p.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall, Associate Professor Rick Considine presents a concert of contemporary drumming styles, concentrating on jazz and funk. At 6 p.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall, Percussion Department Chair Dean Anderson directs the Berklee College of Music Percussion Ensemble in a program of contemporary percussion ensemble music, with featured marimba soloist Martha Cipolla.

And Friday at 8:15 p.m., four faculty vibists -- five-time GRAMMY winner Gary Burton, 2003 GRAMMY winner Dave Samuels, and internationally renowned recording artists Victor Mendoza and Ed Saindon -- will honor four great vibraphone pioneers in Four by Four: a Tribute to Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, Milt Jackson, and Cal Tjader. Performing with the vibists will be top student and faculty musicians, plus special guest, Concord Jazz recording artist Dick Johnson on clarinet. Tickets for “Four by Four" are $10, $4 for seniors.

Saturday, April 5
The Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion will be a day of diverse programs at 921 Boylston Street, plus an evening rock concert at the Berklee Performance Center. Presentations from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the David Friend Recital Hall will showcase young percussion students from Cabot Elementary School, Abundant Life, and Fayerweather Elementary School, led respectively by Berklee faculty members Casey Scheuerell, Ron Savage, and Angelamia Bachemin. From 2 to 3 p.m., Visiting Artists the Pendulum Percussion Duo will perform in the David Friend Recital Hall. From 4 to 5 p.m. in Room 311, Assistant Professor Sa Davis will present a hand percussion clinic. From 5 to 6 p.m. in Room 311, visiting artist Mario DeCuiitis, principal percussionist for Radio City Music Hall since 1979, will present an electronic percussion clinic sponsored by KAT, Inc.

Berklee's Percussion Week 2003 culminates in a rock concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Berklee Performance Center. Associate Professor Mike Mangini will perform with his band Hypercane. This evening's concert will be sponsored by Zildjian and Pearl. Tickets are $5, $2 for seniors.
