Bassist/Composer Rufus Reid Performs with Peabody Jazz Students

March 30, 2006, Baltimore, MD: The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University is pleased to announce that jazz bassist and composer Rufus Reid will be performing as a guest artist on Thursday, April 20th and Friday, April 21st at 7:30 p.m. in East Hall at 17 E. Mt. Vernon Place as part of the series Peabody Explores... The Art of Improvisation. Reid will perform original music and arrangements with Peabody jazz bassists and jazz student small groups on Thursday and with the Peabody Jazz Orchestra under the direction of jazz faculty artist Michael Formanek on Friday. Tickets are $18, $10 for Seniors, $8 for Students with I.D. and available through the Peabody Box Office at 410-659-8100, ext. 2. Reid is a prolific bassist whose name appears on countless hard bop, bebop, swing, and even some pop sessions. He has played with jazz notables such as Buddy Montgomery, Sonny Stitt, James Moody, Milt Jackson, Curtis Fuller, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Nancy Wilson, and Eddie Harris. After moving to New York in 1976, Reid played and recorded with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. In the '80s, he recorded with Konitz, Ricky Ford, Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition with Kenny Burrell, a quintet co-led by Frank Wess and Art Farmer, and in duos with Kenny Burrell and Harold Danko. Reid has also co-led a group with drummer Akira Tana, called TanaReid.
