Jazz Week begins at lunch hour in Downtown Boston with several free public performances by area music students including the Ecce Trio, led by Henrique Eisenmann (Brazilian jazz, Latin rhythms) holding court at the Prudential Center. South Garden, Fausto Sierkowski's Unit (Improvised music) manning Downtown Crossing and the Gypsy Jazz Duo (Gypsy jazz, folk, blue grass)enhancing South Station—Main Train Terminal, Summer Street and Atlantic Ave.

The Boston area is home to an unusual concentration of music schools. And it has a reasonably healthy mix of non profit or alternative art spaces.

This is a godsend for those who like to hear music in a recital setting without the bustle of night club activity whirling around the music.

The Jon Damian Trio

This exciting trio delivers an array of Jon Damian's original music inspired by people and places, tradition, and avant visions of new possibilities. Jon's Rubbertellie, his invention, along with his refreshing approach to the guitar will add a special touch to the concert. He will be joined by a stellar cast of players and composers whose works will also be featured; Allan Chase, saxophonist, and chair of the ear-training department at The Berklee College of Music, and Bob Nieske, bassist and long-time member of Jimmy Giuffre's band and Brandeis professor.

The Outnumbered.

A collective ensemble, The Outnumbered began in 2008 when California saxophonist and composer Jason Robinson partnered with Boston-based creative music stalwarts Charlie Kohlhase, Josh Rosen, and Curt Newton. Focused on developing and performing original music, the group seamlessly moves between beautiful melodies, dissonant abstraction, heavy grooves, and freer rhythmic soundscapes. Their music is robust, beautiful, and focused. In February 2011 the remarkable bassist Bruno Raberg joined The Outnumbered.

Nona Hendryx and Vernon Reid to Perform in Original Berklee Student Musical About B.B.King.

Berklee students write and produce an original musical each year honoring an American music icon. This year's musical tells the story of the life and work of B.B. King. The show will feature two special guest performers—Grammy-nominated vocalist Nona Hendryx (Labelle, solo) and Grammy-winning guitarist Vernon Reid (Living Colour)—and the musical talents of more than 20 Berklee students.

The musical traces King's life from his humble beginnings in the Mississippi Delta to his place as an internationally beloved entertainer and icon of blues music. The show will feature some of his most popular songs, such as “Sweet Sixteen," “Rock Me Baby," “Why I Sing the Blues," and “The Thrill is Gone." Grammy-nominated drummer Terri Lyne Carrington will serve as ensemble director. The musical is directed by Associate Professor Rebecca Perricone, and produced by Associate Professor Amy Merrill.

Kevin Blumenthal of the Boston Globe recently wrote (August 2010), “The Boston-based vocalist [Melissa Kassel] rarely, if ever, takes the standard approach to standards. Where the typical singer shouts, she might whisper; a passage usually taken quickly, she may stretch out like taffy. Yet it's all in service to the improvisational moment being shared with her top- notch band." Harvey Pekar of WBUR radio in Boston said, “She's among the best jazz vocalists to emerge in years."
