The Iridium Jazz Club is pleased to present the ARCHIE SHEPP/ROSWELL RUDD QUARTET featuring Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille.

Tenor man Archie Shepp and trombonist Roswell Rudd played together a lot during the turbulent 1960s but, regrettably, they didn't record together at all in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s. In 2000 they reunited for a Universal/Verve recording Live in New York. After more than 30 years apart that old chemistry is still there. The 67-year-old Shepp (who doubles on piano) and a 68-year-old Rudd have no problem bringing out the best in one another whether they are embracing pieces from the 1960s or turning their attention to songs they wrote in the 1980s or 1990s such as Rudd's Bamako and Shepp's Hope No. 2. Shepp and Rudd are joined by two legends in their own right bassist Reggie Workman, one of the most technically gifted of all bassists, a brilliant player whose versatile style fits into both hard bop and very avant-garde settings did stints with John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey. The same can be said of drummer Andrew Cyrille who is perhaps the preeminent free-jazz percussionist has played with everyone from Mary Lou Williams, Coleman Hawkins to Cecil Taylor and Billy Bang.
