Wolper's voice is very much an ensemble instrument ... and what a delivery! Wolper sounds as if she's singing just for you ... she's come up with one of the strongest and most interesting vocal efforts of the year"--McClenaghan, AllAbout.Jazz.com
She fills torch songs with sensual longing, then makes abstract vocal improvisations feel intimate as meaningful conversation... The core of Wolper's sound is a hip tenderness that inspires trust as she works through a song mix of lesser-known standards and a few originals ... This is mind-sretching music, thoughtful instead of atonal, encouraging rather than confrontational. It is highly recommended for anyone who believes in the timeless essence of cool"==Graham, Tucson Citizen
Join Andrea Wolper and bandmates Ron Affif (guitar) and Ken Filiano (bass) on Tuesday, May 2 at Sweet Rhythm before the trio heads off to tour Germany and the Czech Republic. Michael T.A. Thompson, soundrhythium, rounds out the group.
Wolper's recent release The Small Hours (VarisOne.Jazz), produced by Todd Barkan and built around her longstanding trio with Affif and Filiano, has earned the vocalist and songwriter critical acclaim. The Sweet Rhythm date will feature songs from that release, other favorites from Wolper's repertoire, and some new additions. The Greenwich Village club seems an apt setting for her special blend of sophisticated coolness and sensual warmth.
In her highly original," very individual" style, this brave, unpredictable and soulful" singer wraps standard and non-standard songs and originals in her adventurous, good-natured embrace. Respecting the past while welcoming the future, Wolper moves seamlessly between the intimate and the energetic, inviting audiences to join her on a most entertaining musical ride.
