May 30, 2006; Oakland, California; Andre Bush has long been known as a virtuosic guitarist, cutting-edge composer, dedicated educator and inspired author spanning an increasingly impressive fifteen year career in the San Francisco Bay Area. This July 11, Andre's star will continue to rise towards rock-star status as he performs his headlining debut at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Jack London Square, Oakland.

For the July 11 engagement, Andre Bush is arranging new music paying homage to music icon Jeff Beck, whose burning guitar chops and cross-genre approach mixed rock and jazz in the 1970's. Bush's “Tribute to Jeff Beck" will feature two sets of material from Jeff Beck's landmark albums - “Blow By Blow," “Wired" and other recordings - reconstructed with modern harmonies and grooves.

“It's time for jazz to start kicking ass again," says Andre Bush. “Jeff Beck is one of the most awesome guitar players and musicians I've ever encountered. Listening to his music in the '70's inspired me to pick up the guitar when I was back in high school. The performance at Yoshi's is an attempt to revitalize the music from his older albums for the 21st century, and inspire the same kind of burning enthusiasm that I got listening to Jeff Beck. “

While these goals would intimidate many, they are well suited for a guitarist and composer of Andre Bush's caliber. Growing up in Fresno, California, Andre Bush took quickly to the guitar after listening to such musicians as Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and AC/DC. Although he became grounded in the jazz guitar tradition while attending Cal Arts, Bush's musical style has never strayed far from the high-octane, electrifying sounds of his youth.

Over the past fifteen years, Andre Bush has been an in-demand guitarist and session musician in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has gained much prominence as the Musical Director for Jenna Mammina, appearing on four of the vocalist's acclaimed records. He appeared in a duo performance with vocal legend Nnenna Freelon on her 2005 GRAMMY- nominated Concord Records release, “Blueprint of a Lady: Sketches of Billie Holiday." Bush has also released three critically-acclaimed albums as a leader: “Darwin's Waiting Room" (1999), “Invisible City" (2001) featuring Dave Liebman, and “Start From Silence" (2005). As an educator, Andre Bush has endeared himself to guitar students across the nation as the author of Mel Bay Publications best-seller, “Modern Jazz Guitar Styles." Although he recently returned to Fresno to teach on faculty at Fresno City College, he continues to teach at the Jazzschool in Berkeley and the Stanford Jazz Workshop every summer. Bush endorses Thomastik-Infeld guitar strings.

Importantly, Andre Bush holds the esteem of accomplished colleagues as well as his cadre of guitar students. Mandolin virtuoso Mike Marshall says of Andre Bush's music, “It's an amazing balance between gorgeous melodies and burning chops. Jazz meets pop, meets world, meets something new." Master drummer Steve Smith compliments Bush similarly, saying, “Andre's approach is fresh and modern but with deep roots. His compositions are great to play and great to listen to, a perfect combination."

Andre Bush's fans will find the guitarist's new music and his new band a perfect combination as well. For his Yoshi's headlining debut, Bush will premiere a new ensemble featuring Los Angeles based keyboardist Otmaro Ruiz, bass player Kai Eckhardt, and drummer Deszon X. Claiborne. “All of these guys are amazing," says Bush. “I'm so glad to have these three musicians on the gig, we're going to make Yoshi's rock and groove that much harder."

Music aficionados will also enjoy the opportunity to witness and participate in the making of a live album at Yoshi's on July 11. Recording crews will capture Bush's performance for future audio CD release, and video crews will film the evening for an educational CD-Rom set produced by Truefire (www.truefire.com). The educational product will feature several in-depth lessons by Bush in addition to concert footage, creating a unique product to inspire rock guitarists not yet comfortable with jazz.

It's a line that Andre Bush is eager to blur.
