New York, NY - Even in the eclectic and often unpredictable world of free jazz, there is no one quite like Cooper-Moore. This jack of all trades musical has developed a unique arsenal of instruments and techniques that often surprise, and rarely disappoint. A Cooper-Moore performance is just as likely to feature him playing one of his own handmade instruments such as the diddley-bo (an electrically amplified, low register zither-like instrument held on the lap and played with a mallet) as it is to feature an introspective rhapsody on the piano. No matter what instrument he chooses, Cooper-Moore brings a unique virtuosity and creative fire to his music that inspires both the audience and his fellow musicians.
Cooper-Moore played piano as a child prodigy in churches near his birthplace in the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. His performance roots in the realm of avant jazz music date to the NYC Loft Jazz era in the early/mid-70s. His first group was the collective trio Apogee with David S. Ware and drummer Marc Edwards. In more recent times, he was a core member of William Parkers In Order To Survive quartet and then performed regularly with Susie Ibarra. He is a composer of the highest order, a designer and builder of musical instruments, and has often times been referred to in reverent tones as a musical genius.
This afternoon of music will give the opportunity to hear Cooper-Moore in two distinct settings. The 1:30pm set will feature the electronic side of Cooper-Moores arsenal. He will use electronic instruments as well as voice and percussion in a setting joined by keyboardist Matt Motel and electric cellist Nioka Workman. The 3pm set will feature acoustic music with Cooper-Moore joined by drummer Chad Taylor and saxophonist Assif Tsahar. Both artists have played extensively with Cooper-Moore, with Taylor being a charter member of his group Triptych Myth and Tsahar recording an exceptional 2005 album with Cooper-Moore entitled Tells Untold. Cooper-Moore will utilize his arsenal of handmade instruments in this second set.
