Dreyfus Jazz Artists Dominate at the Prestigious 'Les Victoires du Jazz' Awards in Paris with Wins, Nominations, and Star-Studded Performances

New York, NY — Roy Haynes, Ahmad Jamal, and Geraldine Laurent each took home France's most prestigious music award at Les Victoires du Jazz, France's equivalent of the American Grammy Awards.

This year's star-studded awards event, televised on French Nation Television from Paris, was an exciting night for Dreyfus Jazz. The French record label, owned by producer Francis Dreyfus (with offices in Paris, New York City and Woodstock, NY) celebrated three awards and numerous nominations - not to mention some thrilling performance highlights.

World-renowned drummer Roy Haynes received a “Victoire d'Honneur" (Special Award) for his career encompassing CD/DVD boxed set, A Life in Time: The Roy Haynes Story. The unique retrospective box surveys the career of the Boston-born artist whose unmistakable rhythms propelled 60 years of jazz giants. (The set also picked up an American Jazz Journalist Award for Best Boxed Set earlier this year; it was also selected as one of the Best Boxed Sets of 2007 by The New Yorker.

The Special Award is given out by the Academy of Victoires du Jazz to celebrate the career of legendary artists. To commemorate the special occasion, gypsy guitar great Bireli Lagrene performed a memorable duet with the 83-year-old Haynes (who looks more like 53) on “Autumn Leaves."

Preeminent pianist and composer Ahmad Jamal (78, and also far younger than his years) won Best International Album (Album International de Production Francaise) for his latest album, It's Magic, which came out in June. Jamal's new album, hailed by critics as a career highlight, just graced the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart, the iTunes Jazz Top 10, and it recently peaked at #2 on the Jazz Week Radio Chart. One of the most influential pianists in jazz, Ahmad Jamal is also the music's first cross-over artist--his recording of “Poinciana" was a chart topping hit single in 1958.

Rising saxophone star Geraldine Laurent received the French Instrumental Discovery of the Year Award (Revelation Instrumentale Franaise de L'annee - Prix Franck Tenot) for her Dreyfus debut, Time Out Trio. The album, which also received critical notice in the US, also garnered Geraldine a nomination of Best Instrumental Jazz Album. France's new first lady of the saxophone has arrived!

Other Dreyfus Jazz artists who performed at the Awards show, televised on the French National TV (France 3), were Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine (who also received a nomination for his solo recording, Guitars Two, Best International Album) and Italian drummer/vocalist Aldo Romano in a tribute to Chet Baker.
