We know we mentioned it last month but since this issue officially marks our five-year anniversary, thanks, once again, for all your support.

And it is very needed these days. Since publishing our last issue, we lost two giants - clarinetist Tony Scott and pianist Andrew Hill. For those who attended Hill's last performance at Trinity Church and saw how frail he was yet how strongly and beautifully he still played, this is a particularly painful loss, though any death of a jazz musician makes the tapestry just a little dimmer.

Another painful loss has been the quick death of another important New York City venue, Tonic. Forced to close after nearly ten years of presenting some truly wondrous music, the club is just another victim of the changing face of New York. For both those who have been here for years and experienced the closing of such seminal venues as Slugs, the Five Spot, the Village Gate and many others, this just seems like another depressing par for the course. And for those newcomers who marveled that a place like Tonic existed and the service it provided, we hope you enjoyed it while you could. There are some protests and petitions happening to solidify a place for creative music in New York in the face of escalating economies - visit www.takeittothebridge.com for more information. Also read our Megaphone, courtesy of Marc Ribot, for a particularly lucid interpretation of these current events.

But to end on a more positive note. The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians' new concert series starts this month and a dream of ours to have pianist Muhal Richard Abrams grace our cover has finally happened. Also featured are legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Interview) and tuba man-aroundtown Marcus Rojas (Artist Feature). Our Label Spotlight highlights the important European labels Black Saint/Soul Note (the former which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year) and our Club Profile, on The Center for Improvisational Music in Brooklyn, shows how important that borough is becoming these days.

Here's to more years of progress, tumult and good music!
