Even though it seems like you were still wearing shorts yesterday and despite the fact Christmas music has been piped into stores since before Halloween, we at AllAboutJazz-New York would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy and, dare we hope, jazzy holiday season.

For those expecting to find our annual round-up of Best Of's, don't despair. It had come to our attention that many concerts and album releases were being unfairly neglected merely for happening in December. So we have rectified this injustice by moving our year-end accolades to our January issue. Who knows...maybe a show or album you read about in this issue will make it in. But even without those lists, our December issue is still special. We have included a section of Holiday-themed CDs at the end of our regular CD review section (pgs. 34-35). And on pgs. 36-37, peruse a sack-full of Holiday Gift suggestions, from DVDs to boxed sets, books to Christmas ornaments. And for those brave enough to face the city on New Year's Eve, check the last page of our Calendar (pg. 44) for a special section highlighting all the jazz possibilities with which you can ring in the New Year.

In addition to these holiday treats, we have our usual exhaustive coverage. Our Cover this month showcases the life and work of multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk by those who knew and loved him; a special tribute concert will be held at Saint Peter's Dec. 10th, co-organized by his widow Dorthaan Kirk. Saxophonist Bennie Wallace (Interview) brings a project to Jazz Standard mid-month celebrating Coleman Hawkins. And German pianist Georg Graewe (Artist Feature) makes a rare stateside appearance at The Stone.

And as you are waiting for your presents, read up on Howard Rumsey (Encore), Sharp Nine (Label Spotlight), the Brooklyn Lyceum (Club Profile) or jazz and Frank Zappa (Megaphone by Ed Palermo).

Thanks for all your support during the last year, not just of us but jazz in general. It is the gift that keeps on giving...

Laurence Donohue-Greene & Andrey Henkin
