Philadelphia, PA February 27, 2011..Jazz luminaries will come together on Monday, March 21st at 7 pm at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts located at Broad and Fitzwater Street to pay tribute and raise much needed funds for colleague and jazz saxophonist Odean Pope.

Odean Pope is a world-renowned, saxophonist and recording artist who had worked for years with the legendary drummer Max Roach. In addition, Mr. Pope has been a pioneer educator and mentor, working with the Philadelphia Model Cities program and the Settlement Music School. Now, because of his own medical challenges, one of the premier maestros of Philadelphia jazz needs financial help.

The fundraiser and tribute brings to light Mr. Pope's 30-year struggle with Bipolar Disorder. Mr. Pope's message is for society to overcome the fear and stigma of this often misdiagnosed mental condition that can prevent sufferers from receiving necessary stabilizing treatment.

“I am extremely grateful for all the support! I've been struggling with Bipolar Disorder for many years and think I finally have it under control. I have finally realized it can be helped like any other illness. For those of you who feel ashamed and may be part of this arena—there is help for you too," said Odean Pope

Mr. Pope's manager, Deena Adler gathered together key people of the Philadelphia jazz industry including J. Michael Harrison (WRTI 90.1 FM radio); Graziella D'Amelio and Warren Oree (LifeLine Music Coalition); Don Gardner and Lovett Hines (Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts) and musician Joe Sudler to produce this event.

“I feel honored to represent Mr. Pope in his musical world. As a clinical psychologist, I think his disclosure will help others feel less alone and seek help for their private sufferings. Odean Pope is an extraordinary musician and a compassionate man, “says Odean Pope's manager Deena Adler. In spite of needing help, Mr. Pope's artistry thrives. “Universal Sounds" was just released and “Odean's List," released last year, has been highly acclaimed. He is performing, creating and blowing strong!"

Ticket price is $25. All proceeds will go to the Odean Pope fund. Donations should be made payable to “Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts." Tickets will be available at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts Box Office.
