AAJ senior editor Chris May will give the first in a series of talks about Nigerian Afrobeat originator Fela Anikulapo-Kuti at the British Library, London on Saturday 23 October, as part of the Nigeria 50+ festival.

The event is the first of several to be held in British cities this fall.

May, the author of AAJ's Afrobeat Diaries column and a friend of Kuti's since the 1970s, will be speaking alongside Rikki Stein, Kuti's longtime manager, Gilles Peterson, the DJ and record company owner, and J.K. Braimah, Kuti's lifelong friend and associate.

Through film and conversation, the events will celebrate Kuti's life and achievements and his continuing importance to music and politics today, 13 years after his death.

The British Library event, which starts at 12.00, is being presented by Black History Forum, The New Black, Film London and New York's Knitting Factory Records.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
