All About Jazz Senior Contributor Karl Ackermann Publishes 'A Map of Jazz: Crossroads of Music and Human Rights'

A Map of Jazz is a history of jazz in parallel with world events. Jazz matured in the era of prohibition with organized crime as its patron. It was homogenized as swing music and found its true Black voice with Bebop and the Civil Rights movement. In spite of systemic racism in the United States, fascism in Europe, and anti-Western sentiment in Asia, the music survived throughout the world. Musicians embraced its history but continued to rethink and redefine their craft. Jazz has only one real definition: freedom.

About the Author

Karl Ackermann is a Senior Writer for All About Jazz and has authored his Under the Radar column since 2016. His writing has been published in The New York Times, and Chicago Jazz Magazine. He is a member of the Jazz Journalists Association, and a long-time contributor to the annual National Public Radio (NPR) Creative Music Poll and El Intruso (Argentina) Annual International Critics Poll. He was a host of the 2019 Global Broadcast of International Jazz Day in Washington DC.
