Alice Coltrane is a pianist and organist, a harpist, a composer and, perhaps above all, a trailblazing conceptualist. In 1966, she stepped in for the departing McCoy Tyner in John Coltrane's legendary quartet--and later played with Tyner on his classic 1970 recording, Extensions. Since then, Alice Coltrane has steered her own course. In both her work and her life, music and spirituality have become one. Inspired by Eastern cultures, she was one of the first to play the harp on jazz recordings, to introduce the Indian sitar, and to incorporate tamboura and tablas. For this rare concert appearance, Coltrane will perform with her son, tenor saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane, with whom she recently collaborated on the CD, Translinear Light, her first popular recording in 26 years. Bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Jack De Johnette round out Coltrane's all-star quartet for this exclusive NJPAC engagement. The performance will be introduced by Susan Taylor, Editorial Director of Essence Magazine. Presented as part of NJPAC's Alternate Routes.
