Join Canopy Jazz at Sweet Rhythm for a special night to benefit World Bicycle Relief. 'Star in the East' a Jazz Christmas Celebration, featuring vocalist Alexis Cole and saxophonist Donny McCaslin, will be the first performance of the group. The theme of the evening is an embrace of a spiritual, non-commercial Christmas, reaching musically across the globe to assist those in need.

Cole is the winner of the 2007 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition. She was recently featured on the cover of Hot House Magazine in conjunction with the review of her latest release Zingaro on Canopy Jazz. George Kanzler calls her a rising star in the jazz world. Time Out New York says that Zingaro proves her new prize was no fluke. A jazz singer well worth discovering proclaims the All Media Guide.

The band, led by bassist and arranger Ike Sturm (Jazz Music Director at St. Peter's Jazz Church), will include Cole's longtime drummer Jay Fredrick and pianist Jon Cowherd (Brian Blade, Lizz Wright). Special guests for the evening include the awesome New York saxist Donny McCaslin. His new recording In Pursuit was just released on Sunnyside Records. Also, composer and pianist, Mark Finkin (Cole's father) will perform original pop flavored works and new takes on some of the standard carols.

Introducing the event will be the Reverend Dale R. Lind, recently retired after a lifetime of service to the jazz community as pastor of St. Peter's Jazz Ministry.

World Bicycle Relief provides people in developing nations and disaster relief situations with access to independence and livelihood through the power of bicycles. Their current work in Zambia will provide 23,000 bicycles to volunteer, community-based HIV/AIDS care workers, disease prevention educators and vulnerable households.
