On Saturday, October 18th, The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey will bring back 24 of the artists whose works the museum has displayed to help celebrate its 5th anniversary. The celebration will take place at the museum, located in the Martin Luther King Center in Newtonville, NJ from 5 to 9 pm. It will feature the work of 24 emerging local and regional artists who helped fulfill the museums mission of helping local talent enter the world of museum displays.

Several of the artists have donated artwork to be included in the events silent auction. All proceeds from the auction and the event will support the Museums education programs and general operations.

This will be the first time so many of the Museums artists will be together in one place to exhibit their watercolors, pastels, oil paintings and drawings, says Ralph Hunter, President and Founder of the Museum. Hunters passion for the arts is an outgrowth of his passion for preserving the past. I believe that the Museum must inspire as well as inform, and I regard this as a unique opportunity for art collectors to purchase art while helping ensure the continuation of a venue that has become an important institution in the region.

The celebration will include a retrospective of past exhibits, events and programs along with items from the Museums permanent collection which includes over 9,000 artifacts and documents. The Museum will formally recognize those who have lent corporate, civic, and individual support for its endeavors. The Borgata Heart and Soul Foundation; Anthony and Rita Mack of A & R Enterprises, Inc.; Mayor Chuck Chiarello and the Recreation Committee of Buena Vista Township; The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey; the Senior Citizens of Newtonville; Dennis Levinson, County Executive; Joyce Hagen, Director of the Atlantic City Aquarium; and the Reverend David Mallory of the First Baptist Church of Richland will be among the honorees that evening.

Artists who have already agreed to donate a piece of art for the silent auction are Khalia Barnes, Betty Bembry, Steve and Carol Cuyjet, Maria Emma Escobar, Kandice Fields, Richmond Garrick, Anne Taylor Glapion, Paul Gordon, Melvin Irons, Todd Johnson, Larry Joseph, Cliff Maddox, Earl Parker, Vanburen Payne, Aaron Pines, Rodney Robinson, Burns Rose, Joan Wallace Reeves, Dressler Smith, Lois Smith, Lennox Warner, Leonard Wilkinson and Paulette Williams.

In addition to showing the work of a variety of artists, the museum also houses a permanent collection of African American artifacts and historical documents that will also be on display during the event.

The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jerseys 5th anniversary celebration will take place at the Museum on Saturday, October 18 from 5 pm to 9 pm. Reservations are available online at aahmsnj.org for $55 per person or $100 for two people.
