May2002The occasion of our 2nd anniversary is a chance to look back at what we have accomplished. Though there is always more work to be done, we at AllAboutJazz- New York can at least sleep soundly knowing we have made progress since our first humble steps. How do you quantify progress? Statistics my dear readers. And we got lots of them! Issue one (May 2002) was a mere slip of 16 pages delivered to less than 35 locations, 85% of them in Manhattan below 96th Street. As of this issue, our 25th (a meaty 32 pages), we can be found at over 125 locations in three boroughs including over a dozen in Brooklyn alone. Our initial print run? 3,000. Now? 10,000.

The sections whose growth we are most proud are the CD reviews (pages 10-19) and our Event Calendar (pgs. 24-28). Our first issue featured five reviews; this issue has over 30. In our first 24 issues, we published 447 CD reviews from 209 different labels.

May2004 Our first event calendar listed 201 shows; April 2004 included 650 performances drawing from a possible 279 venues. And since we began including sideman information with each listing, there is little reason to go anywhere else for your concert information needs.

But perhaps the most satisfying results in our two years of existence have been unintended. Jazz has a rich history and plenty of overlap. Every issue, some example of this interconnectedness becomes apparent without us planning it. In this issue, our cover subject Jackie McLean (see page 9) was instrumental in the beginnings of our featured label SteepleChase (see page 6). Artistic visionary Jeff Schlanger - in action throughout this month
