CAM Jazz announced that iTunes, the world's largest digital music service, will be the retailer of 56 selected albums from the seminal Black Saint and Soul Note catalogs. iTunes will create a special sale room to feature the music from December 1 through January 5, 2010.
The 56 albums include works by artists such as Lester Bowie, Art Farmer, Charlie Haden, Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor... just to name a few.
Two of the most celebrated labels of the 80s, Black Saint and Soul Note were established in Italy in 1975 by jazz aficionado Giacomo Pelliciotti. The labels rose to prominence for their commitment to emerging avant garde jazz artists such as Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton and Jaki Byard. The catalogues include approximately 580 essential and rare recordings from some of the most acclaimed and innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
Over the course of their 30-year history, with Giovanni Bonandrini at its helm, the two labels have accumulated an extensive collection of recordings by era-defining artists. In 2008 both catalogues were acquired by CAM Jazz, a Grammy Award-recognized label formed in 2000 in Rome, Italy.
