On Monday, June 23 there will be a “A Celebration of Life for Ronnie Mathews" for the great jazz pianist Ronnie Mathews at Sweet Rhythm Jazz Club in NYC at 88 7th Avenue South. Doors open at 7:00 P.M. and jazz music will be played throughout the night until the last musician is finished celebrating his legacy. Ronnie Mathews is suffering in the last stages of pancreatic cancer. The prognosis is very dire, and for that reason we are celebrating his life urgently, while he has the chance to have knowledge that all his friends in the musical world are sending out their music and love to him on this eventful night. Donations of $25 at the door will go to his family to cover the costs of a proper send off for Ronnie, giving him the love and respect he deserves. Confirmed musicians at this time include: Gary Bartz, Roni Ben-Hur, Ray Bryant, Dwayne Burno, George Coleman, Charles Davis, Akua Dixon, Kathy Farmer, Sonny Fortune, Lucy Galligher, Louis Hayes, Jimmy Heath, Melba Joyce, John Lee and the members of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Jimmy Owens, Benny Powell, Eric Reed, Larry Ridley, Claudio Roditi, Bill Saxton, Don Sickler, Donald Smith, Neil Smith, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Michael Weiss, Frank Wess. Randy Weston, David Williams. More musicians are being added daily. For reservations please contact Sweet Rhythm Jazz Club at 212 255-3626 and tickets can be bought as well on the web at sweetrhythmny.com

Special Announcement From The Jazz Foundation:

On Sept 10, 2008, Uninsured Jazz and Blues musicians will have a chance to get free cancer screenings at Englewood Hospital. You must sign up ahead of time. We are hoping this will help prevent the great tragic losses we have experienced this year with Dennis Irwin and now Ronnie, who never knew early enough about their diseases. For Jazz Foundation Cancer Screening sign up: please email [email protected]

For those who cannot attend but would like to contribute, you can do so to the Jazz Foundation of America, please make a note on your check and your envelope that it is for Ronnie Mathews and if you use the Pay Pal at the Foundations' web site, there is a place where you can note it is for Ronnie Mathews.

Please note that if there is money left over after Ronnie's needs have been met, then it is the wish of the family that any funds above what was needed, go to the Jazz Foundation to help other musicians in crisis.
