The Fifth Annual Zannie-Do Fest is happening on Saturday May 19th at the Mermaid Inn, 7673 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, with some fabulous blues groups giving their time and talent to raise money for Jazz Bridge in memory of the late Philly blues/jazz singer Zan Gardner, a founding member of the nonprofit who tragically died in a car accident five years ago. Appearing at the Zannie-Do Fest will be the Randy Lippincott Band, blues star Deb Callahan and her group, and the Flashpoints. Shows start at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $20.00 and can be bought online at http://www.jazzbridge.org/products-page. For more info: 215-247-9797 or 215-517-8337

Jazz Bridge, a 501C3 nonprofit that assists our local jazz and blues musicians in crisis, is sponsoring this concert.

Philadelphia's blues and soul-drenched vocalist and songwriter Deb Callahan grew up in the Boston area but has been a fixture on the mid-Atlantic music scene since the late '90s. During that time she and her band have gained a reputation for an exciting live show featuring a mixture of blues, soul and rock originals and classics. Her 2002 debut CD If the Blues Had Wings was featured as the hot debut in the October/November 2004 issue of Blues Revue Magazine, who referred to Callahan as the next Bonnie Raitt. Her fourth and most recent CD, entitled Tell It Like It Is was released in October 2010 and debuted at #19 on the Living Blues Radio Chart. The new CD is a successful collaboration between Philadelphia producer Chris Arms and Deb and was recorded at Studio 4 in Conshocken, PA by Grammy Award winning Producer/engineer Phil Nicolo. Callahan's road-tested band includes Allen James, Garry Lee and Tom Walling. Doing social work in the heart of Philadelphia would be a good place to learn about life's hard knocks and this urban school ground taught singer/songwriter Deb Callahan well. Her rich, honest and soulful tunes resonate with listeners and run the gamut from soulful ballads to upbeat, dance-oriented romps. In a recent review, Living Blues Magazine said “Callahan’s voice has the spiked fervor of contemporary Susan Tedeschi, but it’s richer and smoother. Stylistically she’s picked up a lot from one of her earlier influences, Nina Simone – Simone’s squirming rhythms and hypnotic vocals reverberate in Callahan’s music. . .Deb Callahan is a shouter, a crooner, a soul-belter and above all a gifted lyrical interpreter. She could sing the phone book and make it sound good." Jazzreview.com said “Her powerful, soul-tinged bluesy vocals showcase both an abundance of grace along with more than just a smidgen of grit. On the grace/grit scale, she weighs in heavily alongside the finest female blues belters ever. In fact, the potent force of her vocals should secure her presence on the national blues scene for years."
