The American Jazz Museum is proud to present the winning compositions from our Jazz Palette composition contest in a special performance by the Hermon Mehari Quintet in the Blue Room, Monday, April 20, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.

“The opportunity to combine another public program such as this type of event with our current exhibition in the Changing Gallery, entitled Jazz Then And Now, is always great. It is also another true representation of the diversity of generations creating the music," states American Jazz Museum CEO, Greg Carroll.

“This type of interaction with the at-large jazz artist community is somewhat unique in that the program includes participants across the entire spectrum - ranging from high school students to professionals. It's opportunity that allows the American Jazz Museum to realize another facet of our mission," concludes Bill McKemy, the Education Manager at the American Jazz Museum.

The winning composers are as follows:

High School Division: Mack Clay, a student at Lincoln Prep, for his composition Pepinillo Oxidado.

College Division: Ryan Adamsons, a student at the University of Missouri, Columbia for his composition Sandero.

Professional Division: TJ Martley, a Kansas City pianist, for his composition Ember’s Pet.

The Hermon Mehari Quintet consists of:

Hermon Mehari – trumpet
Matt Otto – tenor saxophone
Andrew Ouellette – piano
Karl McComas-Reichl – bass
John Kizilarmut – drums

The event is free and open to the public.

About the Blue Room at the American Jazz Museum

Named after the famed 1930s Street Hotel club in the Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, the Blue Room simultaneously honors the past and showcases the present names in jazz.

A multifaceted exhibit highlighting the countless musicians who crafted “Kansas City jazz,” a sound known all over the world, the Blue Room also provides a distinctive platform to present dynamic performances from the best local and national jazz talent in an intimate setting.

Come down, bring your instrument and sit in at the weekly Blue Monday Jam – or just take in the sounds of one of Kansas City’s best jam sessions.

Big bands typically perform the last Monday of each month, and our Latin Jazz/Salsa series gets shakin’ on the last Thursday of each month (except where otherwise noted on the calendar).

Catch Cumulus Radio’s Magic 107.3 FM broadcasts live at Indigo Hour in the Blue Room.

At the Blue Room, upcoming bands, seasoned veterans of the local jazz scene, national talent and internationally renowned jazz artists share the spotlight.
