The nominations are in for the 2013 British Jazz Awards. An important feature of the British Jazz Calendar, the 27th edition of the awards will as always recognise some of the best talent that the jazz scene in this country has to offer.

The only national awards to be decided by public vote, this year’s nominees will be vying for a place at the Award Winner's presentation and performance as part of the kind of top draw lineup you rarely see these days—except, that is, at the British Jazz Awards.

After last year’s presentation at The Concorde Club in Hampshire, the 2013 Awards will be presented in altogether different surroundings: the Georgian St Paul's Church in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

A first for the awards, the slightly more leftfield choice of venue for the public presentation and performance, taking place on July 10th as part of the Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival, has been made possible by the support of The Jewellery Quarter BID.

Decided by a panel of experts, this year’s nomination list reads as a roster of the best mainstream jazz musicians and bands active in Britain today, along with the CD releases that haven’t been off the stereos of jazz fans in the last 12 months.

Those same jazz fans will have the chance to vote for stalwart leaders of the line such as Alan Barnes (nominated for his work on saxophone and clarinet), Gareth Williams (piano) Bruce Adams (trumpet) and Karen Sharp, or ace rhythm men such as Alec Dankworth (bass) and Ralph Salmins (drums).

In addition to the more seasoned players, the Rising Star category aims to give a platform to young performers who are fast staking a claim to a place at the top table of British jazz, and this year includes bassist Tim Thornton, drummer Ed Richardson and trumpeters Henry Armburg Jennings and Laura Jurd.

Voting takes place online and via paper forms included in the forthcoming issue of The Jazz Rag magazine until June 1st. The winners will be announced at the presentation in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter on July 10th, with tickets on sale at theticketsellers.com.
