Ramsey Lewis 75th Birthday Celebration in Millennium Park, September 3

As a music genre known for riffs and improvisation, it seems only fitting that the 32nd Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, presented by CareFusion has grown throughout the years from a two-day event to a four-day with several locations.

The Chicago Jazz Festival is proud to once again partner with CareFusion (NYSE: CFN), a leading, global medical device company, on this free event. With funding provided by the Chicago Jazz Partnership, the Chicago Jazz Festival presented by CareFusion will feature free music events on Thursday, September 2, at Millennium Park and Friday, September 3, at Cultural Center and Millennium Park, before moving to festival grounds in Grant Park, Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5 (complete schedule follows release).

The festival will open on Thursday, September 2 with performances in the afternoon at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Beginning at noon, the stage will open with Umbrella Music's Bridging Improvised Music and Dance and feature Tatsu Aoki's Miyumi Big Band, Jodie Christian's Quartet and close at 3:15p.m. with Jim Wagner's All-Stars featuring Willie Pickens, Ari Brown, Jimmy Ellis, Robert Shy, Frank Russell, Corey Wilkes and Maggie Brown.

On Friday afternoon at the Chicago Cultural Center performances in the Randolph Café, the Claudia Cassidy Theater and Preston Bradley Hall will include a wide spectrum of the music, from a three-vibraphone group led by Jim Cooper to the Latin beat of Hector Silviera to the experimental sounds of cellist Tomeka Reid.

The Chicago Jazz Festival presented by CareFusion is also very pleased to announce that it will celebrate Ramsey Lewis' 75th birthday on the first evening performance of the festival on Friday, September 3 in Millennium Park. Lewis, born in Chicago on May 27, 1935, has enjoyed a long career as a legendary jazz pianist and composer, topping musical charts in the sixties with hits such as “The In Crowd," “Hang on Sloopy" and “Wade in the Water." Winner of three Grammy Awards, the septuagenarian was invited to perform his recently premiered “Proclamation of Hope" at the White House by President Barack Obama.

Ramsey's birthday celebration will close Friday evening at Millennium Park, which kicks off with a Celebration of Chicago Public Schools Music Teachers featuring Lincoln Park High School's Jazz Ensemble and Noteworthy, a jazz ensemble of Chicago Public School jazz teachers. The evening also includes pianist James Dapogny, Mike LaDonne Trio with special guest Eric Alexander and Festival Artist in Residence Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Orchestra. Mitchell will work with Chicago musicians and invited guests from her travels in other parts of the world including Craig Taborn, Anthony Davis and Edmar Castenda on four festival performances, including a commissioned composition which premieres on the Pritzker stage at on Friday evening.

The festival continues in Grant Park on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11a.m. and continuing to 9:30p.m. The four stages include The Chicago Community Trust Young Jazz Lions Stage, which debuted last year and features high school and college jazz bands, representing the future of Jazz music in Chicago.
